Abstract

Among the characteristics that have differentiated Costa Rica from the other Central American republics, its greater political stability is often mentioned. Although it has not been without turbulence, it is indisputable that its history has been considerably less eventful than that of the other four countries. To explain this fact, various reasons have been listed: the late conquest of Costa Rica, the poverty that prevailed during Spanish rule, the higher percentage of the population of European origins, the early development of the coffee economy, etc.
