Abstract

I express my respectful greeting to the President of the Republic and to the members of the Governing Council. Ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of the Association Unity of Rectors of the Private Universities of Costa Rica (UNIRE), which involves 37 private universities, I am pleased to express the complacency for the invitation that has been spinning to participate in this Meeting and to express the opinion of this Sector on the generation of employment in the country in the face of the current crisis.

In Costa Rica there are, authorized by CONESUP, 50 private universities. According to data from the State of Education, 62.3% of the university degrees issued in Costa Rica were awarded by private universities and 37.7% were issued by state universities. This data gives a clear idea of the magnitude of the number of students

enrolled in private universities. It also suggests that out of every three university students in Costa Rica, one is paid for by the State and the other two cover their studies with their own resources. Calculate how much the savings that the Costa Rican State has annually amount to if it were to finance all higher education, both public and private!
